Within the United States, the term “state law” refers to the law or rules of each separate United State. In New Jersey as with other states, these state laws are passed by the state legislature. They are then signed into code by the New Jersey state Governor. New Jersey state laws, like any other state laws, often conflict with the United States federal law. When there is an unclear interpretation of state law, the issue or conflict is resolved by the federal courts.

New Jersey state laws follow the state constitution. In the United States, every separate state has its own separate constitution of state laws. A constitution is made up of a governmental set of rules. Like statutes, New Jersey’s state constitution is codified as a written legal document. The constitution operates under its own distinct political agenda and existence.

There are state laws that regulate everything from driving to property to taxes. State laws may differ from state to state, although crimes of a violent nature usually carry similar penalties in every state in America. There are some state laws in New Jersey that don’t exist in other states.

-One unusual New Jersey state law declares that it is illegal to wear a bullet proof vest while committing a murder.

-In New Jersey, state laws disallows drivers from operating their own gas pumps. Under this state law, gas pumps must be operated by the individuals working at the gas station. Oregon is the only other state who requires this to be a state law. Insurance costs for gas stations are lowered if the gas station only has professional employees operating the gas pumps.

-Another state law in New Jersey designates the month of May as “kindness awareness month in New Jersey.” New Jersey citizens are urged to participate in kindness educational programs and try to inspire kindness in one another.

A individual is said to be guilty of a disorderly persons offense when, being informed that a party line is needed for an emergency call, refuses to immediately relinquish the particular phone line.

-When selling spray paint, a business or establishment must have a nearby sign posted informing minors of legal action that may be taken against them if they deface public property with graffiti.

While some state laws are unusual, in general, they serve their purpose by allowing a state to have legal rules that every individual must follow.
